Planning a travertine project? Trying to decide between all the different colors, finishes and patterns can make your head spin.
Don’t worry, the natural stone experts at A&X Masonry have got you covered. Let’s take a quick look at the most popular travertine patterns so it’s easier for you to make your final choice.
Let’s start with one of the most popular patterns.
The straight pattern installation is when equally sized square or rectangular tiles are aligned with the main walls in a room. It is a classical pattern that conveys a conservative and formal look.
This elegant dining room is a great example of this. The striking features of the room are the chandelier and the see-through fireplace. The straight laid genuine travertine stone floor tiles have an elegant and conservative look that doesn’t draw your attention away from the main features of the entire space.
The herringbone pattern is one of the more formal travertine patterns and can be done with a variety of different tile sizes. The tiles are laid at a 90-degree angle to each other to create this elegant pattern.
Check out the bathroom installation in this picture. Despite the modern silver color of the large format tiles, the herringbone pattern complements the overall formality of the marble tile shower and other bathroom fixtures.
The French (Versailles or Ashlar pattern as it’s sometimes called) is a popular pattern for open or exterior spaces and patios. It’s a timeless design that never seems to go out of style.
While it’s not an ideal choice for small indoor spaces like bathrooms, it’s common to see large kitchens with this form as well as patios and pool decks with French pattern pavers. This makes the Versailles pattern a great choice for outdoor projects.

The diagonal pattern is a popular choice for making a room seem larger. You can notice the difference as soon as you walk into a room which is why a lot of homeowners choose it for small areas like bathrooms and backsplashes.

The running bond pattern is a simple pattern that leads to clean lines and a modern look. When working with long rectangular tiles, you can lay them lengthwise along the longest wall of a room to make it seem longer. Or rotate them 90 degrees to make the room seem wider.
For a rustic look, go with smaller tiles that have tumbled stones or a chiseled finish. But for a more modern-looking running bond, opt for larger tiles with a honed or polished surface.
The running bond pattern is also an excellent choice for backsplashes and shower surrounds — as you can see in the shower in the picture.
Those are the most common types of travertine patterns, but they’re not the only ones. Here are a few more you might run into.
Also, don’t feel like you have to decide on one specific pattern. You can also create a unique combination of several different patterns, colors, and surface textures. For example, check out this backsplash installation.
It’s got a combination of the straight pattern with a diagonal section above the stove. Plus, there are small, polished mosaic inserts with a contrasting color.
Really, with travertine, the sky’s the limit. It’s available in such a wide range of patterns and color combinations — ivory, silver, blue, gold, and brown — it’s easy to find one that’ll match your project’s decor.
